In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
