Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Cars, walls and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Officers say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered many other smeared automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests indicate the liquid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; investigators are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the event," they added.
City officials stated they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for details.
An important representative commented the attack left him speechless and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This act hits the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he stated on a platform, referring to the death of nine people by a shooter focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
